Description

This comforting Bangers and Mash recipe features juicy smoked turkey sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes and topped with rich onion gravy. It delivers the cozy flavors of a classic Irish comfort dinner while staying completely family friendly with no pork or alcohol used.


Ingredients

4 smoked turkey sausages

2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and cut into chunks

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup whole milk warmed

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 large yellow onions thinly sliced

2 cloves garlic minced

2 tablespoons all purpose flour

2 cups beef broth or chicken broth

1 teaspoon mild vinegar or lemon juice

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme

Salt to taste

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley optional


Instructions

1. Place the peeled potato chunks into a large pot and cover with cold salted water then bring to a boil

2. Cook potatoes for about 15 minutes until fork tender

3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat

4. Add the smoked turkey sausages and cook for 8 to 10 minutes turning occasionally until browned then remove and set aside

5. In the same skillet add the sliced onions and cook over medium low heat for about 12 minutes until soft and golden

6. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute

7. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir well to coat

8. Slowly pour in the broth while whisking to prevent lumps

9. Stir in vinegar Worcestershire sauce thyme and black pepper

10. Simmer the gravy for about 6 minutes until thickened

11. Drain the cooked potatoes and return them to the pot

12. Add butter warm milk salt and pepper then mash until smooth and creamy

13. Place mashed potatoes onto plates top with sausages and spoon onion gravy generously over the dish

14. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve warm


Notes

Traditional versions use pork sausages and stout beer but this recipe replaces them with smoked turkey sausage and broth so the dish is fully family safe

Chicken sausage plant based sausage mushrooms or lentil sausages can also be used

Adding a small amount of vinegar or lemon juice provides the brightness usually created by stout in traditional gravy

Warm the milk before adding it to mashed potatoes to keep them smooth and creamy

Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to three days and reheated with a splash of milk
